New HP Indigo 5500 and 3500
HP recently expanded its Indigo lineup with two new models: the 5500 and the 3500. The 5500, the new Indigo flagship press, delivers several upgrades over the 5000, including a larger four-drawer feeding unit that holds 6,000 sheets, and a redesigned feeder that handles a wider range of substrate weights and thicknesses of 55 lbs text to 130 lbs cover for coated stocks. Paper-handling capabilities increase to 3" x 19" stock. Printing in seven colours, the press has a speed of 68 pages per minute in four-colour or 272 in monochrome, at resolutions of 812 x 812 dpi or 2,400 x 2,400 dpi with high-definition imaging. In addition the fifth and sixth units can be filled with light cyan and light magenta to extend tonal ranges and smooth gradations, offering near-silver-halide quality six-colour process photo imaging. A faster on-press ink replacement system enables users to replace special and spot colours on press while continuing to print other jobs. Previously the machine had to be stopped.
The 3500 is a new entry level press for monthly volumes between 150,000 and 250,000, is available in versions up to seven colours, and prints 68 colour pages per minute or 136 in monochrome.

New Durst large-format model boasts uninterrupted continuous board printing
Durst expands its large-format offerings with two new models. The new 98" flatbed Rho 800 Presto, available in the fourth quarter of this year, boasts uninterrupted, continuous board printing. Materials are registered at the leading edge using mechanical front stops, making it possible to load multiple sheets side by side. The next series of boards are pushed up against the first and are printed without interruption. The device prints 100, 4 ' x 2.6' sheets per hour, on materials up to 1.58" thick.

The Rho 351R prints simultaneously on two 5'-wide rolls of different materials with different diameters. It also has a stepless skip-white function in the XY direction, an integrated manual cutting device, a built-in security system for unattended printing of large rolls and double-sided printing. The UV inkjet printer prints on a variety of media up to 11.5' wide.

MAN Roland aims to cut solvent consumption costs
MAN Roland’s new line of solvent recyclers claim to reduce solvent consumption costs by up to 90% and virtually eliminate the need for solvent disposal. The recyclers clean used blanket and cylinder wash-up fluids for re-use via an off-press, self-contained process that separates spent wash-up fluid into its component parts: solvents that go back to work on the press, distilled water that is safely drained, and waste debris that requires no special disposal process. The company says the recycler automates the recovery process so it entails virtually no extra labour costs. A press crew has to switch out the drums of dirty solvent for containers of recovered solvent, and occasionally remove solids from the device. Used solvent is transferred to a distillation tank where it is heated. The solvent vaporizes leaving behind a residue. A condenser cools the vapour back into a liquid, a separator removes and drains excess water, and the recovered solvent flows into a clean drum for re-use.
