Tembec shutters Quebec pulp mill
Yet another Canadian pulp mill is taking some downtime. Tembec has idled a Quebec pulp mill as well as three other mills in France. The Canadian mill will be idled indefinitely, the company said. About 120 employees were laid off. Tembec said the decision was made because of slow demand, and expectations the market will not improve anytime soon. The Quebec mill produces high-yield pulp, used in a variety of papers, including printing and writing papers. It has an annual production capacity of 250,000 tonnes.
SFX Pulp temporarily closed, 225 laid off in Quebec
SFK Pulp laid off more than 200 employees for six weeks at its Saint-Félicien, Que. mill in March. The temporary shutdown was in response to low market demand, and the company also closed a mill in Fairmont, WV, for a month. Combined, production of northern bleached softwood kraft pulp was cut by 45,000 tonnes, and recycled bleached kraft by 25,000 tonnes.
Thunder Bay mill sold to Superior Fine Papers
Thunder Bay Fine Papers was sold to a group of investors known as Superior Fine Papers Inc. for an undisclosed amount in Feburary. It will be the only coated freesheet mill in Canada, producing brands like Jenson Plus, Thunder Gloss, Route 88, and coated and uncoated postal reply card products. Thunder Bay Fine Papers was placed in receivership in November 2008, and put up for sale because it owed more than $20 million to creditors. Provincial, Abitibi, and Cascades have all owned the mill in the past.
